BUILDING & MAKING

Building and making is at the heart of LitShop. Giving girls* real tools, materials, and expert guidance through the design process helps them develop an entrepreneurial and DIY mindset. Our programs provide girls* with the tools they need to solve problems in their own lives and their communities using their own brilliance and ingenuity.

As we grow, LitShop implements building and making programs based on the interest of our girls* and the talents of St Louis builders and makers. Some of our current and planned building and making focus areas include:

  • Carpentry

  • Printmaking

  • Woodworking

  • Metalworking

  • Architecture

  • Fiber Arts

  • Edible Sculpture

Literacy

Literacy skills are critical to a girl’s academic and personal development. Students who don’t read proficiently are four times more likely to drop out of high school than their proficient peers.  Literacy skills are critical to informed decision making, personal empowerment, and active participation in global and local socioeconomic communities. In short, literacy empowers girls* and enriches their lives. We want our girls* to be proficient, lifelong readers and writers who have rich, literate lives.

LitShop’s literacy programs are designed to engage girls with diverse, relevant texts that serve as mirrors for themselves and windows to the wider world as well as help amplify their voice through writing workshops. Our girls created and published their own literary magazine, WeLit!, which is available for purchase and download. Occasionally, LitShop girls may be in need of reading remediation, and that support will be provided on a case-by-case basis.

LitShop literacy modules may include:

  • Book Clubs

  • Writing Workshops

    • Fiction

    • Poetry

    • Creative Non-Fiction

  • Podcasting

  • Digital Communications

  • Journalism

  • Community Literacy

Leadership

Leadership is the result of the work we do at LitShop. As girls reach adolescence, their self-esteem is much more likely to decline. However, middle school girls thrive in supportive social situations, and they are better able to assert their independence when they feel connected to others. LitShop is staffed by people who identify as female or gender expansive who model positive, clear communication and encourage and support girls to take risks, be creative, and collaborate with each other to build the world they want to see.
